Women, peace and security

What is the UNSCR 1325?

UNSCR 1325 is a landmark international legal framework that addresses not only the inordinate impact of war on women, but also the pivotal role women should and do play in conflict management, conflict resolution and sustainable peace.

War’s greatest lesson

peace.jpg

‘From the dawn of time it seems that humans have always found reasons to fight each other.  We have waged war over water, land, diamonds, oil, religion, skin colour, or one man’s simple desire to rule th world. This tradition of aggression has kept us busy.  There have been people to bury, cities to rebuild, orphans to care for, and refugees to rehabilitate.  However, this has been the less difficult work. The much more challenging task has been to learn war’s greatest lesson- that is isn’t worth the trouble’

A journey of change

MENA Women’s Platform is a new project to promote women from the region and the west, to become more engaged in social change, political engagement and peace.

MENA is an acronym referring to the Middle East and North Africa.

Although it refers to predominantly Arab countries, it often includes Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

It struck us, that far too often that women from these countries, be it living in their respective countries, or those of us living in the West, have very little opportunities to engage in change making.

For too long, we have attended, event, after event, and seen news after news, which did not include these vital voices. Often effected directly by the decisions made by others at the top.

It is an opportunity to explore and gain a better understanding of the political situation around us, and how women can have more of a say on the issues which concern them.

As well as this, we look at the role women have in resolving conflicts and being engaged in peace. With much of the MENA region suffering with ongoing conflicts, it is time for women, who are often heavily effected by these conflicts to be part of the process of peace and have their voices heard.

The work we will be engaging in is open to all women, however, the case studies and information shared are focused in this region.

We hope to have a date for our first workshop, exploring leadership, conflict resolution and peace, as well as the need for political activism and involvement in 2016.
